It’s Easy

Sadly, it is.

Penny Lane

I’ve always loved this song for the image it inspired within me. I found this video and thought it came very close to that image.

Growing up, it was my brother’s album where I first heard this song on (and later recorded to cassette and played on a tape deck between the front seats of a 1978 Toyota Corolla for years). The album had a scratch that skipped from the middle to the end of the fifth verse. I saw the banker sitting waiting for his train, but I never heard what the fireman did in the pouring rain.

Weirdly, even hearing the song today, I anticipate that skip.

Squeeze, Pulling Muscles (From the Shell)

I heard all these Squeeze songs from the same album and fell immediately in love with the band and their music!

They do it down on Camber Sands

They do it at Waikiki

Lazing about the beach all day,

At night the crickets creepy

Squinting faces at the sky

A Harold Robbins paperback

Surfers drop their boards and dry

And everybody wants a hat

But behind the chalet

My holiday’s complete

And I feel like William Tell

Maid Marian on her tiptoed feet

Pulling mussels from a shell

Pulling mussels from a shell

Shrinking in the sea so cold

Topless ladies look away

A he-man in a sudden shower

Shelters from the rain

You wish you had a motor boat

To pose around the harbor bar

And when the sun goes off to bed

You hook it up behind the car

But behind the chalet

My holiday’s complete

And I feel like William Tell

Maid Marian on her tiptoed feet

Pulling mussels from a shell

Pulling mussels from a shell

Two fat ladies window shop

Something for the mantelpiece

In for bingo all the nines

A panda for sweet little niece

The coach drivers stand about

Looking at a local map

About the boy who’s gone away

Down to next door’s caravan

But behind the chalet

My holiday’s complete

And I feel like William Tell

Maid Marian on her tiptoed feet

Pulling mussels from a shell

Pulling mussels from a shell

But behind the chalet

My holiday’s complete

And I feel like William Tell

Maid Marian on her tiptoed feet

Pulling mussels from a shell

Pulling mussels from a shell

Happy Birthday

He is a hundred years old by common reckoning, way beyond his prime. Still he soldiers on, lifted and buffeted by the winds of various fortune. Some good. Some bad. Being so long in the tooth has given him an enhanced and different perspective, he thinks, as only age can.

Only in his dotage did his dreams bring him to this. His dreams and the government’s. The implanting of desire. Any and all desire, for the asking. The chip cost 57 credits and was yours to keep, implant and enjoy for as long as it lasted, typically a day, 24 hours.

A chips was the size and shape of a thumbnail, but flat black on one side, gleaming gold on the other, the contact surface. Pressed against the neck by the palm until the “rush” set in, the hard-coded story or  dream pumping through his cerebral cortex, vivid to his eyes.

Dreams of JFK. Searching back for a presumed more “innocent” time in history. But of course no time in history was ever truly innocent. Still it felt innocent to him and that’s all that mattered – 19 May 1962.

I don’t necessarily agree with everything said in this story from The Guardian, but it has the basic chronology right and that video is still striking today.

And…

Like a bell calling across the waters.

Our life together is so precious together,

We have grown – we have grown,

Although our love is still special,

Let’s take our chance and fly away

Somewhere alone

It’s been so long since we took the time,

No-one’s to blame

My the time flies so quickly

But when I see you darling

It’s like we both are falling in love again

It’ll be just like starting over

Starting over

Every day we used to make it love,

Why can’t we be making love nice and easy

It’s time to spread our wings and fly

Don’t let another day go by my love

It’ll be just like starting over

Starting over

Why don’t we take off alone

Take a trip somewhere far, far away

We’ll be together all alone again

Like we used to in the early days

Well, well, darling,

It’s been so long since we took the time

No-one’s to blame

My the time flies so quickly

But when I see you darling

It’s like we both are falling in love again

It’ll be just like starting over

Starting over

Our life together

Is so precious together

We have grown – we have grown

Although our love

Is still special

Starting over

Let’s take a chance and fly away somewhere alone
